Originally this piece was supposed to take place as a live performance at the Jamestown Art Center in the Spring of 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the creative team reworked the concept of the piece into a short experimental film. This film, titled Waves & Shadows, was premiered virtually in December, 2020 as part of the Motion State Arts Dance Film series.

 

To create the score and sound design for this film, I constructed a homemade “sound table,” embedded with contact microphones, in order to record the sounds and textures from pieces of the actual garments worn in the film. Also incorporated are site-specific field recordings, piano, and electronic processing using MAX/MSP. This project presented a unique opportunity for me, in that the score and sound design were created first, and then the film edited accordingly, which is the opposite of any of my previous film scoring experiences.
