chromatophonia

Chromatophonia (color-sound) is an on-going investigation into the physics and expression of waves in the form of light and sound. Several formulae and processes were created to superimpose the spectrum of visible light (color) onto the spectrum of audible sound.

Originally, I created a series of oil paintings which were then used as experimental chromatophonic musical scores.

Chromatophonic études were then created first using PureData, and then MAX/MSP software, coded to control a piano via MIDI, which translated different ranges of the visible light spectrum into musical notes.

For a concert with the Aurora Chamber Orchestra, I was asked to interpret three pieces from their program as oil paintings. I utilized chromatophonic  processes to transform the scores of each piece into a triptych of oil paintings.

The latest installment of chromatophonia is my Chromatophonic Triptych, a composition written for woodwind quintet with live sound and video processing.
