The third Mezzomese. For the third installment of the MezzoMese series, I offer a sequel to a previous album, postludes. This new album is titled postludes II. It was recorded in September, 2022 shortly after the first postludes album. There is not much to say (or write) about the process, other than that it was composed piece-by-piece, and titled as postludes because each one came at the end of something. That is, after a session of recording or of studio practice, whatever I was working on (usually something more experimental and expansive) would morph into something rhythmic with a bass line and drums. I am always recording. I have always been and always will be.

[Caption: Album artwork for postludes II. It was created using my computer's built-in grapher software. It is a hodgepodge of mathematical functions graphed on top of each other in a three-dimensional plane (x, y, z). Because much of the melodies, harmonies, and rhythms of postludes and postludes II were created using similar mathematical means (i.e. logic functions, the Euclidean algorithm, etc.), I felt one of my digitally-derived 'math paintings' was well suited to visually illustrate what the music is doing. In reality, each postlude is a complex graph of several functions, but in four dimensions (t, x, y, z).]

I solely used modular synthesis to compose all of the postludes. The melodies and bass lines were all synthesized using sine, square, triangle, and sawtooth functions (oscillators generating those waveforms). There are wavefolders and filters to help transform and animate the waves. All percussion or drum sounds were synthesized 'from scratch' using white noise, or two-operator frequency modulation. Also, I am enamored with low-pass gates, which serve as some sort of sonic foil, or glue, or thread tying everything together. Each piece was recorded live, in a single take, as part of my continued lifelong practice of improvisation. There is some processing post-recording to give a little more zest here and there.
